The photograph featured here, taken in February 2015, shows one of the many red squirrels that frequent our garden throughout the year. The somewhat disappointing quality of the image is due to the fact that the picture was taken through our kitchen window, which is protected by fine-mesh netting in order to prevent insects coming into the flat in the summer months.
Unlike the UK, where red squirrels have largely been replaced by their larger and stronger grey cousins, most squirrels in Germany are red. They can often be seen in gardens in twos or threes, chasing each other up and down trees. The squirrels that frequent our garden seem to favour a diet of hazelnuts, probably because there are several hazelnut trees in the neighbourhood. I am forever picking up hazelnut husks from our lawn!
